Side hustle taxes for the 2026 tax year: what to report and how to pay

Tax-year note: Tax information on this page applies to the 2026 tax year (returns filed in 2027), from IRS pages checked in November 2026. Figures and dates are labelled with their tax year where they appear. Check current IRS pages before you rely on them.

A side hustle starts small, and taxes are easy to forget until the first spring. Then the surprise arrives: extra income tax, plus self-employment tax, with nothing withheld. This guide explains how side income is taxed for the 2026 tax year and the simplest ways to stay ahead of it.

All income is reportable

The IRS gig work guidance is clear: you must report income from your side work even if you do not receive a Form 1099 or other information return. Cash, app payments and marketplace sales for your business all count.

Forms you might receive include:

These are cross-checks, not limits. The guides to Form 1099-NEC and Form 1099-K explain each.

Two taxes on side profit

Income tax. Your net profit is added to your other income, such as wages, and taxed at your rates. Because it sits on top of your job income, it is often taxed at your highest rate.

Self-employment tax. The IRS says you generally owe self-employment tax if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more. The rate is 15.3%, made up of 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare, applied to 92.35% of net earnings. Your job wages count toward the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500 listed by the Social Security Administration; above it, only the Medicare part applies.

You can deduct half of your self-employment tax when calculating income tax.

Report on Schedule C

Sole proprietors report side business income and expenses on Schedule C and calculate self-employment tax on Schedule SE. The guide to Schedule C walks through the form.

Ordinary and necessary business expenses reduce your profit, for example supplies, software, a share of phone costs, advertising, and business mileage at the IRS standard rate of 72.5 cents per mile for 2026. Keep receipts and a mileage log.

Paying the tax during the year

Nothing is withheld from side income, so you have two options.

Option 1: raise your job withholding. Submit a new Form W-4 to your employer asking for extra withholding each pay period. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator helps calculate the amount. For underpayment penalty purposes, withholding is generally treated as paid evenly through the year, which can help even if you increase it late in the year.

Option 2: make estimated payments. The 2026 Form 1040-ES says you generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits. For the 2026 tax year, the due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.

Many people with steady jobs find option 1 simpler. The guide on how much to set aside helps estimate the amount either way.

Hobby or business?

If you do something mainly for enjoyment with no real profit motive, it may be a hobby. Hobby income is still reportable, but hobby expenses are not deductible as business expenses. Running the activity in a businesslike way, keeping records and aiming for profit point toward a business.

Records to keep

The IRS stresses keeping records of income and expenses. At minimum:

A separate bank account makes all of this easier.

Employer and contract rules

Taxes are not the only check. Your employment contract may restrict outside work. The guide to running a side business while employed covers that.

When it grows

If your side income starts to approach your salary, look at moving from side hustle to full time, which covers the planning involved.

For the 2026 tax year, report all side income, expect self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400, deduct genuine business expenses on Schedule C, and pay as you go through extra withholding or estimated payments.

Questions people ask

Is there a minimum before side income is taxable?

No minimum for income tax: all income is reportable. The $400 figure is the threshold for owing self-employment tax on net earnings.

Can I avoid estimated payments if I have a job?

Often. You can ask your employer to withhold more through a new Form W-4 to cover your side income. For penalty purposes, withholding is generally treated as paid evenly through the year.

Is a hobby taxed the same way?

Income from a hobby is still reportable, but hobby expenses are not deductible the way business expenses are. Whether an activity is a business depends on factors such as profit motive and how you run it.

Do my wages affect self-employment tax?

Yes. Wages count toward the Social Security wage base, which the Social Security Administration lists as $184,500 for 2026, so high earners may owe less of the Social Security part.

Do this week

  • Open a separate account for side income and expenses.
  • Track every payment received, with or without a 1099.
  • Keep receipts for business expenses.
  • Estimate the extra tax and either raise your job withholding or diary estimated payment dates.
  • Gather any 1099-NEC or 1099-K forms each January and reconcile them with your records.
